Reciprocal website listings are a total pain, and they can hurt you if the other web site is disliked by the search engines. Excellent article.

Hi Karen,
Thanks so much for your comment. I absolultely agree with you if the sites are of a good quality (not a porn site just because it gets traffic) and if the site is relevant (since that counts towards the link). Unfortunately, too many of my clients see any link as being a good link, which is just not the case. My clients are led to believe that this will help with search engine optimization and it will actually count against them in the long run. Excellent point!

with all due respect, I think you are believing too much what you have read about link exchange. Link exchange has been around for a long time and is a classic marketing method "you scratch my back I will scratch yours". I link exchange with quality sites relevant to mine and my site's traffic and search rankings are better than ever. What you may be confused about is the difference between fully automatic link exchange and linking for one's end user and what benefits the end user. linking for the end user is still beneficial and useful to the web. folks should avoid linking in high amounts for seo purposes and keep linking natural and relevant.
